SP is an acronym for the Latin "sine pondere", which translates to "without weight." At only 260 grams, THM's Scapula SP sets the limit of what is currently technically achievable in a lightweight carbon fork. No other fork reaches the same low weight while providing elite race level performance without compromising safety. While at 260 grams, this is already one of the lightest forks on the market, Thm has gone further still. The weight includes the integrated expander for headset adjustment and resistance to compression. Most other manufacturers do not include this in their weights which adds another 25-30 grams to their claimed weights.
Despite all the attention their products' weight receives, THM's top priority during all stages of their design process is safety. The SP fork underwent the same rigorous in-house and independent testing procedures as the standard Scapula fork, and remained intact after test simulations of more than 100,000 kilometers. The strength and confidence of the Scapula SP design is revealed in its generous rider weight limit of 209 pounds. For heavier riders, THM recommends their standard Scapula fork.
The fork's stiffness is far greater than average. Lateral stiffness, important for hard sprints and precise cornering, remains very high despite the low weight. Comfort of the Scapula SP is improved a bit compared to the extremely stiff standard model. As comfort can only be had at the cost of reduced brake stiffness, the fork's stiffness remains on the conservative side. This is a pure-bred race fork with high shudder resistance.
The secret behind the performance of the Scapula SP lies in the layup of continuous carbon fibers all the way from the steerer down to the dropouts. Even the dropouts have a carbon fiber core. The wall thickness of steerer and fork legs varies continuously to provide an optimal stiffness-to-weight ratio. The elliptical interior shape is perfect to take on both large forces from direct-on hits and extreme side loads. Careful attention to detail during the design process led to sensationally low weight combined with superior stiffness.
Please note that the minimum possible cut steerer tube length on this fork is 150 mm.
