Since the end of 2010 ENVE has been in collaboration with Simon Smart, the genius behind the SES lineup and all around Aero Guru. The ex Formula One Aerodynamicist has been helping cyclists of every discipline improve their race times through aero components and riding position since 2007. With the use of wind tunnel testing and CFD analysis the Smart Enve System began production, and has since become one of the benchmarks for wheel aerodynamics. Popularized in tubular rims first, It wasn't long before riders requested the same aero performance in a clincher variant. With the introduction of the 3.4 rim set ENVE had a set of do-it-all lightweight focused rims combined with impressive aerodynamics. The result is a high volume clincher rim with aerodynamics similar to that of tubulars, and the easy maintenance of clinchers.
In the search of ideal aerodynamics, ENVE has invested countless hours into research and development, and testing of their designs real world performance. To ensure their product is at the top of its game, wind tunnel testing, computer modeling, and rider feedback were all factors the final product. The result is a front and rear specific setup that have minorly different profiles to suit their situation. The front has a shallower rounder profile than the rear, promoting aerodynamics without creating too large a profile, which can be susceptible to heavy cross winds. While the rear has a deeper more pointed cross section. Using the high volume rim has a twofold purpose. First, the higher volume allows riders to run a lower pressure, reducing rolling resistance and improving handling. The wider rim also allows a smoother transition between the tire and the rim which improves the aerodynamics.
In their short time in the industry, ENVE has become one of the most well know manufacturers when it comes to high end carbon components. The shallower cross section keeps weight low and gives the rider optimal control through the varying conditions, with little sacrifice to aerodynamic performance. Thanks to ENVE's new molded brake track, performance is superb regardless of wet or dry conditions, and under heavy braking situations produce less heat which is especially important to address with clinchers. Thanks to their proprietary spoke hole molding process each rim possesses improved strength and durability compared to traditional drilled rims. Since the layup process is molded around the spoke holes the nipple-rim interface is strengthened, allowing higher tension wheels that promote longevity and reliability. The understated black decals can glisten, or disappear depending on the viewing angle and pair perfectly with the rims unidirectional carbon finish. Fully tubeless compatible these rims offer yet another level of comfort while riding. For riders looking to do so, tubeless systems offer "Cadillac suspension" to the bike industry. Each 3.4 rim comes with ENVE's internal brass nipples, a valve extender, tubeless rim tape, and a set of ENVE's proprietary brake pads.
