Whenever a new groupset is released by any of the major groupset manufacturers the first thing that comes to a tinkerer's mind is groupset compatibility. Now that both Shimano and Sram are producing 12 speed groupsets, we had to know if they were cross compatible. We had a feeling there were gear ratio's that were more optimal than each brands stand alone systems.
What if you could take Open's UP frameset and pair it with both Shimano and Sram components to deliver the perfect gear rations for both road and gravel riding. We wanted to keep the top speed of a road race bike and still have enough low end to get over any gravel climb.
After much tinkering, testing, we settled on a SRAM Force Xplr 10-36 Cassette and Carbon-Ti 48/33t chainrings up front for top end speed almost identical to a 53/11t and a better than 1:1 ratio for the climbs.
SRAM 10-36 Force Xplr Cassette mounted to Carbon-Ti X-hub centerlock hubs in green.
160/140 Carbon-Ti X-Carbon SteelCarbon 2 Rotors and Shimano Dura-Ace 9200 Brake Calipers take care of braking. A Carbon-Ti X-Lock thru axle keeps the wheels on.
The SRAM Red Flat top chain mates perfectly with the SRAM Cassette and has no issues with being run through a Dura-Ace 9200 derailleur.
The Fair Wheel Bikes V2 Carbon Water Bottle cage comes in at ~20g and has 4 different finishes. 3k Matte is shown here.
165mm Lightning Carbon Road Cranks paired with Carbon-Ti's newest 12-Speed compatible Carbon Chainrings. These cranks come in at 270-285g (Depending on finish) making them some of the lightest cranks out there.
We went with SRAM's Red flat top chain but their mountain chains work as well.
Cane Creek's eeSilk+ Seatpost provides 35mm of suspension, taking the edge off big hits while descending rough gravel roads. With different elastomer options you can fine tune this seatpost for maximum comfort.
This beautifully crafted MCFK Carbon Stem and FSA K-Wing AGX handlebars round out the cockpit. Our own Fair Wheel Bikes 3k headset spacers and top cap keep things looking nice and uniform.
A green Carbon-Ti top cap bolt and Cane Creek's AER headset round out the steering bits.
These green Carbon-Ti centerlock hubs are laced to Sapim CX-Ray spokes.
Enve G23 Gravel rims are some of the very best gravel rims out there. Lightweight, with built in compliance, and anti-pinch flat technology make them hard to beat.
700c x 38mm Panaracer Gravel King SK tires are a classic gravel tire and a great all arounder.
Shimano Dura-Ace 9200 di2 shifting with Lizard Skins DSP handlebar tape. We love the shape of these new hoods.
