Extralite has improved upon their already fantastic crank, and gifted us with the QRC 3.
The QRC 3 crank has taken a giant leap forward from the previous generation. For starters we are talking 15% stiffer than the QRC 2.
Weight wise we are looking at 17% lighter, which means 359 grams. Very impressive considering that that weight puts us in carbon crank territory.
The QRC3's look a touch different than their predecessor. The overall arm shape has changed a fair amount, and even the machining process has been improved upon.
Extralite uses point-to-point 5 axis 3D milling for the creation process. Using this method, the tooling within the CNC machine is able to work on all 5 axes of the crank at the same time. Using this method, each crank typically takes several hours to be completed.
In taking pictures and testing these cranks i have had alot of time to just look at them and admire how handsome they are. The milling process adds so much depth and detail, its really hard to not just sit there and stare. This is important to consider if your anythig like me, always trying to build the 'coolest bike on the group ride'
The cranks come with ABI Enduro bottom bracket bearings(two 6802's), cups are then specified during the prchase process.
Then there is the 'Aero-Nose', that is inserted into the end of the crank arm.
The Aero-Nose is 3D printed from nylon.
It is not essential, but it does provide an increased aero dynamic profile for the crank. It helps keep dirt from building up inside the crank arm as well. The Aero-Nose ads ~1.5grams per crank arm, so there is additional weight savings to be had if you do decide to go without.
When it comes to a high quality alloy crank, there is really not much that can compare with this, especially when you consider that this is lighter than many carbon cranks that are out there. It is worth noting that currently these cranks are only available with 170mm arms.
Check out the QRC 3 listing today, and get a set for your next dream build.
