German manufacturer AX-Lightness, long known for their uniquely designed, extremely lightweight carbon fiber bicycle components, presents this truly incredible climbing wheelset. Yet at an impressive 1225 grams, the Selection 28C is not a high-maintenance, race-day-only wheelset; these wheels are designed and spec'd from the ground up to be ridden reliably on a daily basis, and packed with features to compete with other modern road clinchers. AX-Lightness wheels are hand-assembled by experienced builders for the greatest possible attention to detail; in-house quality control and testing ensure maximum perfection and safety.
A complete set of Swissstop-manufactured carbon brake pads are included for the best possible braking performance in both wet and dry conditions.
AX-Lightness 28C Rims
The secret to the extreme low weight of this carbon clincher wheelset is in the rims. Using a shallow, yet aerodynamically optimized rim profile, AX-Lightness is able to present a superior climbing wheelset that also performs well in varied terrain and conditions. Not content with creating a mere technical masterpiece, AX-Lightness displays some of the best finish work in the industry; attractive, yet minimalist and tasteful. Keeping with current trends, the sidewalls are generously spaced to 26mm, allowing for an 18mm wide interior dimension, with a unique center channel designed to work well with both clincher and tubeless tires. The wide spacing of the tire bead hooks helps create a rounder tire profile, allowing for lower tire pressures to be used. Relative to narrow rims with high-pressure tires, riders will experience a noticeable increase in comfort and cornering confidence, with a reduced rolling resistance for superior speed.
With an eye on safety, AX-Lightness has taken special care in the design of their rims' braking surfaces. Borrowing from their experience in Formula 1 component manufacturing, AX selected a high performance, heat-resistant resin and associated construction processes to prevent the overheating issues common with many carbon clincher rims. Post-molding, the rim's braking surfaces are lightly machined for the best possible out-of-the box performance.
AX-Lightness carbon rims feature molded spoke holes, along with specially molded internal nipple seats. The use of internal nipples creates an aesthetically clean look, but more importantly it spreads the intense stresses of spoke tension over a larger area. This yields a rim that is overall much stronger, while allowing the use of higher spoke tensions for increased long-term durability of the wheels.
DT Swiss 240s Straight Pull Hubs
Considering hub options for a wheelset such as this, the DT Swiss 240s platform was the obvious choice. While not the lightest option available, the 240s is head and shoulders above the competition when it comes to durability, serviceability, and reliable performance. The straight pull version of the 240s offers a modern look without the fatigue concerns of standard hub flanges and J-bend spokes. This hub is available with either a Campagnolo or Shimano/Sram 11-speed freehub body, and is easily interchanged between the two.
DT Swiss Aerolite Straight Pull Spokes
With their minimalist sleek aerodynamic profile and excellent reputation for consistent quality and long fatigue life, Aerolite spokes are again a clear choice for the AX Selection series. The thin bladed section of these spokes is cold-forged from 1.5mm round wire, which increases its material strength while reducing functional stresses on the spoke ends. An added benefit of a bladed cross section is that spokes may be held in place during the assembly process, increasing the quality of the built wheel. The high end spokes are suitably paired with DT Swiss Prolock aluminum internal nipples.
