Known for producing astoundingly light carbon fiber components, AX Lightness has been meticulously crafting carbon into bike components since the turn of the century. Their first foray into the market was with the ultralight Sprint carbon saddle, the first of its kind. Shortly after celebrating a year of production, AX Lightness found itself supplying its products to elite riders in the Tour de France. With this early encouragement, AX has not slowed in their pursuit of innovation and is continually improving on their designs and technology. There are several great milestones peppered throughout their history: the lightest road handlebar in production in 2004, and the lightest racing frame in 2009, to name a few. With their involvement in automotive composites manufacturing giving them valuable experience beyond the world of cycling, we expect to see great things from AX in the future.
The culmination of years of research and development, the Rigid carbon Stem represents the pinnacle of composite technology and manufacturing technique. With the lofty goal of producing an oversize carbon stem unrivaled in weight and performance, AX Lightness found itself undertaking no small task. The result is a beautifully sleek stem in which you can see the specific carbon weave layups used. The carbon layup is where this stem gains its impressive performance statistics while maintaining its low weight. The body is composed of unidirectional strands wrapped diagonally from steerer to stem clamp. The clamping flanges are reinforced with 3k weave to combat the extra surface stresses in these areas. The large rectangular center section is attributed with the stems stiffness, while preserving the spectacular vibration damping characteristics of carbon fiber to reduce hand and arm fatigue. The all carbon body has no metal inserts, and instead uses full carbon flanges and external hardware to secure the handlebar and clamp the steer tube. With all black aluminum and titanium hardware to complete its stealthy look, the Rigid stem is an understated crown jewel. With a rider weight limit of 100 kg this featherweight can withstand the punches. Recommended for road racing and cross country mountain biking, this stem is the lightest on the market with such a usage range. To achieve weight savings without sacrificing performance is no small task, yet thankfully the AX Lightness achieves a perfect blend of performance and aesthetics with the Rigid.
