Kinlin Tune Wheelset Details

Over the past several decades, the evolution of the cycling industry has increasingly yielded lighter, better quality, and more economically-priced equipment. At Fair Wheel Bikes, we’ve attentively followed this trend; seeking out, testing, and selling some of the best-valued components on the market. This “climber’s special” hand built wheelset brings together three of our best and most popular options in lightweight hubs, spokes, and rims at a fraction of what you’d pay for a stock wheelset at a similar weight. We say “similar” because the sub-1400 gram wheelset offerings from most big wheel manufacturers are slim. Those who do offer them make compromises through the use of expensive composites or fragile, thinly extruded rims.

Using our extensive custom wheelbuilding experience, we’ve designed a wheelset that is impressively lightweight, yet durable and dependable enough for most riders. We opted for a higher 24/28 spoke count, compared to the more commonly used lightweight spoke count of 20/24. Taking the weight penalty of an extra four spokes per wheel allows us to extend the fatigue life of all the spokes, increase the strength of the build, and allow for easier truing when needed.

To get the best possible life and performance from these wheels, we recommend them for riders under 160 pounds. For riders up to 180 pounds, this wheelset may be a good option for low-volume, event-specific use (i.e. hill climb races). Feel free to contact us if you’re unsure if this wheelset is right for you; many custom options are available.

Kinlin XR-19w Rims

KinLin's XR-19w is manufactured from their signature niobium-aluminum alloy as a lightweight, yet sturdy 700c clincher rim in a classic semi-box section shape. These rims are equipped with stainless steel eyelets, an attractive addition that allows for easier assembly and service by decreasing friction between the spoke nipple/rim interface. These rims are finished with an attractive black anodizing and a high quality machined sidewall for smooth, predictable braking performance.

Tune Mig 70/Mag 170 Hubs

German-manufactured Tune hubs have long been a popular option for both high-end, expensive carbon wheelsets and more-budget oriented lightweight builds such as these. This is no surprise; expert construction, competitive price point, and a continually evolving design are the hallmarks of Tune’s production, bestowing near-universal popularity. The current model hubs feature stout aluminum construction, with oversize 17mm axles front and rear, and durable steel bearings.

Sapim CX-Ray Spokes

The CX-Ray is Sapim's flagship high performance spoke. Don't let the low weight of these spokes fool you; the CX Ray's tested tensile strength is nearly 50% better than a standard straight gauge spoke, with a fatigue life three times as long. These spokes hold their own under the world's best athletes: road racers, triathletes, and even downhill racers. Consequently, the CX-Ray is the go-to spoke for any high end wheelset, from low spoke count climbing wheels to ultra-durable, high-strength 32 spoke mountain wheels. These are the lightest and most durable stainless steel spokes available today.
