Alex, regarding your comments about the R1, in the UK they're considered a bit of a death wish bike i.e. far too much like a race bike on the road which may explain why insurance is VERY high for them. In the 1000 range, the GSXR1000 seems the best of the bunch?
Interestingly, no-one (including me) has mentioned the Triumph Daytona 675. All the reviews I've seen suggest that's the 'benchmark' bike? However, for some reason Triumph seem to think that the US market prefers their 3 litre bike![]()
JMT, I think Harleys are great, but they are for riders who don't mind being left behind![]()
I don't know about "death wish", but the R1 is definitely the best literbike I've ever ridden on the track, hands down. Everything moves so fast, though - my dad just returned from Kawasaki's press intro for the new ZX-10R, and even though the track was pretty dusty off-line (Losail, Qatar), his initial impression was EXTREMELY positive.
In mentioning the 675, you've completed the list of bikes making up my current dilemma. A friend has an incredibly clean gunmetal 675 I almost bought, but then I saw the new flat black 600RR and sort of fell in love with that bike. But in the back of my mind I keep remembering how good that R1 felt at Laguna and imagining how much faster I could go on DOT race tires, and I wonder if I should just give up and buy a damn 1000 like everyone else.
Still stuck in indecision phase...

Why? Simply because after many years without a motorbike I realized it's way too easy to get in legal trouble on open roads with a sport bike nowadays. I have good self-control but the legal system here is way strict on road stuff. It's easy to go slightly faster than allowed and consequences can be ugly. Not something I want/can afford to go through...
