Masterpiece clamp tuning

Postby UpFromOne » Tue Sep 27, 2011 6:19 am

Just got a Thomson Masterpiece post, 330mm length and 191g. w/ stock steel bolts.
Ordered the titanium bolts & nuts as per usual, but stunned at the massive clamp pieces.
The top clamp piece alone is 33g !

Anyone know a place that makes the clamping parts in carbon, or ti?

Or, has anyone substituted a lighter top clamp from another make?

If you search weight weenies there is a guy in Poland that makes a carbon upper and lower clamp for Thomson. When I did mine inclusive of the titanium bolt kit my 31.6 X 330mm setback Thomson was 153 grams.

I have his parts on 2 bikes (MTB and Road) and they work amazing. I bought Ti bolts from Toronto Cycles. This brought the weight down a lot.

Great link, thanks! That'll be plan B tho, as just today I ordered a pair of KCNC yokes to try with the stock bottom cradle & ti bolts.
I'll try to post a pic of the post & report after some use.

Here's a couple pics of the modded 330mm post, with black ti bolts. A simple tuning of the top clamp & bolts alone brought it from stock 191g down to 159g. Yes, I used 6mm bolts and ever so slightly reamed out the post holes. I say do what works.

A 12.3 lb. fixie. A couple more parts to replace to get into the 11s.

Surprising how fast you can go in a 70" gear, over all types of terrain.

I see that Smud Products has a 90kg weight limit. Has anyone pushed the limit on this?
