718gram wheelset.

Postby madcow » Fri Feb 13, 2009 8:28 pm

These were put together for a customer who wanted to do something application specific and very light.

Using new Edge 1.25 rims with Extralite SX rear and M5 flanged front and Pillar 1422 spokes.

Definitely one of the lightest wheelsets ever done. And still not silly expensive being quite a bit under $2500. The only set I know of that's been done lighter is Gunters custom Lew, but at $15,000 they were only 14grams lighter than these.

Wow, those are amazing. The set is lighter than my current front wheel

Very nicely done 8-)

To put things in perspective, that pair is lighter than the 16 spoke carbon front wheel that was built at our company some years ago. How technology moves on

Aren't there tires that weigh more than the front wheel?

Nicely done!

Two questions:
  • I'm interested in hearing how these ride in cross-winds. I have a similar wheel (Extralight front instead of M5, 1.24 rims instead of 1.25, Veloflex Record tires, Mastik glue 3-layers rim + 1-layer tire) and in cross-winds it's a bit sketchy. Not too bad, but clearly much less stable than Reynolds M32T's with Veloflex Carbon. I wonder with even the even lighter 1.25 rims this effect will be even greater.
  • Is the rim profile different than the 1.24's? I can't tell from the photos. 1mm extra dish, right?

What is the real weight of both rims?

Sketchy in cross winds? Wow. I wouldn't have expected to hear that. Wonder what would be causing that. You'd think that the low profile would be almost invisible in cross winds & I wouldn't think that weight would effect cross wind handling. Strange. Anyone else experience this?

Possibly a low net mass tire+rim results in less "gyroscopic" inertia to rotation. Also, at 55.5 kg I'm more susceptible to being blown around than an 80 kg guy.

I didn't write it down, but I'm pretty sure one was 192 and the other was 193.

Having ridden a couple of really light wheelsets, I can say that the feeling is present, but it does seem to depend alot of the bike and it's geometry. Twitchy bikes make the issue much clearer, while more stable bikes don't have much of an issue at all.

i'm reminded of the scene in "There's something about Mary". "Six minute abs" etc etc. how long will it be before we go 717, 716......

that said, who wouldn't want a set? Will my 85kg crush them like a tin can?

Those are amazing. Seems like clincher versions could be built up and still weigh under 1000 grams, correct?

That would be awesome.
