SES 8.9 Details
When first sitting down with Simon Smart to design a line of aerodynamic wheelsets, ENVE targeted three distinct performance goals and three separate systems as objectives to achieve those goals. While each system shares a common aesthetic, the intended applications are as varied as the disciplines within the sport of cycling. The shallower, climbing-oriented 3.4s and all-rounder mid-depth 6.7s were introduced initially in the Spring of 2011. These long-awaited 8.9 rims represent the most aerodynamically aggressive ambitions of the Smart System, and are geared toward Time Trialists and Triathletes.
With their 8.9 series, ENVE intented to develop a wheelset that will perform as well as a disc aerodynamically while maintaining the predictability and handling of a traditional spoked wheelset. What resulted is a rim that is within 5% aerodynamically of the best-tested disc. Both sets of data are derived from Smart's testing procedures and involve six bikes of varying tube shapes and a mannequin rider. Also key in these rims’ development is Smart's stability index, a steering metric designed to quantify the predictability of handling in real-world situations. The goal of the Smart ENVE System rims is to create a linear relationship between wind and handling, meaning that a 2 mph increase in wind will cause the same increase in torque on the steering axis as the next 2 mph increase. The same linear relationship is applied to the wind’s yaw angle, where a 2 degree increase in yaw will require the same amount of correction input from the rider as the next 2 degree increase.
With a near-match to disc aerodynamics, but with superior handling characteristics, the next consideration in this comparison is weight. Where disc weights range from 900-1200 grams, it’s no difficult task to build an ENVE 8.9 rear wheel 16-33% lighter, with a finished weight close to 800 grams.
ENVE rims are intended for use in virtually all weather conditions, terrains and disciplines. Using their proprietary molded spoke hole design, ENVE ensures maximum strength at the spoke-rim interface while allowing higher spoke tensions that improve wheel reliability. Smart System rims also feature an all-new textured sidewall design that improves braking response and rider safety. In a departure from their traditional bold graphics, ENVE has opted instead for understated and elegant black decals that vary in appearance depending on light conditions.
Each rim purchase includes Pillar internal spoke nipples, an ENVE valve extender, and a pair of Enve's proprietary brake pads.
Ordering
Available exclusively through Fair Wheel Bikes - custom colored ENVE decals! To order your custom decal set, simply purchase a decal upgrade for each rim set purchased. Each decal upgrade includes 12 decals for a front and rear rim set. Decals are not available separate from rim purchases. Rims are shipped with decals applied. Standard rims include the stock black and white ENVE Smart System decal.
