Typically this time of year new product announcements seem to be few and far between, especially anything exciting as most companies are waiting for Eurobike/Interbike to show new products. However to mix things up this year we’ve decided to buck the trend and release info on some things ahead of the major shows. With Eurobike being just a month away this seems like a good time to talk about some new wheel stuff from Tune that will be shown there, and this is stuff that we are particularly excited about. In years past Tune had outsourced their carbon production, but a few years ago they bought an existing company and began to shift all of their carbon production to be in house. These wheels were the focus of most of that work.

Skyliner: First up is something new but that has already been seen in public, the Skyliner. Ridden to victory by Chris Froome in this years Tour de France. The Skyliner is a traditionally shaped carbon tubular rim.

    Model: Skyliner
    Rim Type: Tubular
    Rim Material: Carbon
Rim Dimension: 25mm deep, 18mm wide
    Rim Weight: 220 grams
    Spokes: Sapim Super Spoke
    Spoke Count: 20/24
Hubs: Tune Mig 45 and Mag 150
    Wheelset Weight: 825 grams
    Rider Weight Limit: 90kgs

Skyliner Clincher An amazingly light clincher version of the above Skyliner. As far as we are aware this is by far the lightest production clincher ever.

    Model: Skyliner Clincher
    Rim Type: Clincher
    Rim Material: Carbon
Rim Dimension: 25mm deep, 18mm wide
    Rim Weight: 300 grams

    Spoke Count: 20/24
Hubs: Tune Mig 45 and Mag 150
    Wheelset Weight: 965 grams
    Rider Weight Limit: 90kgs

Skyline Disc An alloy clincher disc wheelset at a super light weight.

    Model: Skyline Road Disc
    Rim Type: Clincher
    Rim Material: Aluminum
Rim Dimension: 25mm deep, 18mm wide
    Rim Weight: 355 grams
    Spokes: Sapim Cx-Super
    Spoke Count: 24/28
    Hubs: Princess Skyline and Prince
    Wheelset Weight: 1300 grams.
    Rider Weight Limit: 90kgs.

Airline is the next wheelset we’ll look at and one that really interests us. This is Tune venture into truly aero shaped rims and will be available only as a clincher. They spent the last year testing in CFD and the wind tunnel until they were satisfied that they had a winner. It will come as no surprise that the shape is very similar to what Enve is doing with the Smart rims and Zipp with the Firecrest as this seems to be the shape that everyone agrees is the cutting edge not only in terms of aerodynamics, but also handling in cross winds.

    Model: Airline
    Rim Type: Clincher
    Rim Material: Carbon
Rim Dimension: 41mm deep, 26mm wide
    Rim Weight:395 grams
    Spokes: Sapim CxRay
    Spoke Count: 20/24
Hubs: Tune Mig 45 and Mag 150
    Wheelset Weight: 1185 grams
    Rider Weight Limit: 110kgs

Airline disc The Airline disc is an aero shaped, deep section carbon disc brake wheelset.

    Airline disc.
    Rim Type: Clincher
    Rim Material: Carbon
Rim Dimension: 41mm deep, 26mm wide
    Rim Weight: 400 grams
    Spokes: Sapim Cx-Super
    Spoke Count: 24/24 or 28/28
    Hubs: Princess Skyline and Prince.
    Wheelset Weight: 1285 grams.
Rider Weight Limit: 90kgs for 24h, and 110kgs for 28h.

Schwarzbrenner The wheels also get some changes/additions for this year. Schwarzbrenner series of wheels are a more traditionally shaped rim and a little less expensive, but still produce one of the lightest clincher wheel sets possible.
    Model: Schwarzbrenner 25
    Rim Type: Clincher
    Rim Material: Carbon
Rim Dimension: 25mm deep, 18mm wide
    Rim Weight:340 grams
    Spokes: Sapim CxRay
    Spoke Count: 20/24
Hubs: Tune Mig 70 and Mag 170
    Wheelset Weight: 1180 grams
    Rider Weight Limit: 110kgs

    Model: Schwarzbrenner 42
    Rim Type: Clincher
    Rim Material: Carbon
Rim Dimension: 42mm deep, 18mm wide
    Rim Weight:425 grams
    Spokes: Sapim CxRay
    Spoke Count: 20/24
Hubs: Tune Mig 70 and Mag 170
    Wheelset Weight: 1398 grams
    Rider Weight Limit: 110kgs

More details, pictures and pricing will be available shortly.

Not sure if this is just rounding or unit to unit variation, but why is the Skyline clincher wheelset 140g heavier than the Skyline tubular wheelset, when all specs seem to be identical (are they?) between the two, except for the rims being 80g per rim heavier in clincher, based on which the clincher wheelset should be 160g heavier?

Also, was Chris Froome riding the complete Skyline tubular wheelset as spec’d above, or just the rims with some other wheelset configuration?

I think it’s just due to rounding and estimates. Take all the weights with a grain of salt as there could be a little variation, the weights are to just give an idea of where they should be.
